Maggie O’Brien, PhD — Adolescent & Adult Psychologist

Authentic, Empowered, and Value-Informed Living

I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed my predoctoral internship at Arizona State University’s Counseling Services in 2026. Prior to my doctoral training, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Iowa State University in 2019. After completing my undergraduate education, I earned a Master of Science in Psychology at Arizona State University.

Throughout my training, I have cultivated a strong clinical foundation through my work in university counseling centers and healthcare settings. I have worked primarily with adults and have experience providing individual therapy. Here at Centered Mind Counseling Services, I am currently working as a Postdoctoral Psychologist. As an Associate working toward licensure, I am under the supervision of an approved supervisor.

How We’ll Work Together

In my work with clients, I consistently ask, “What does authentic, empowered, and value-informed living look like for this person?” Over time, I have found that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with a feminist framework, speaks powerfully to this question. Through ACT, I view client change as happening through building present moment awareness, seeing the importance of language and narratives, and enacting valued action. With a feminist framework, I collaborate with my clients to understand how experiences and beliefs are shaped by systems, social norms, and cultural expectations.

I show up as myself, model authenticity, and work from an open, culturally informed, and empathic approach. I strongly value the therapeutic relationship and support my clients to more deeply understand their relationships and relational patterns through an interpersonal approach. In addition to ACT and Feminist therapy, I also incorporate trauma-informed practices and utilize a range of therapeutic interventions depending on the unique needs and goals of my clients.

The Benefit of Having a Full Team Behind You

One of the things I value about working at Centered Mind Counseling Services is that integrated care is available to you if and when you need it. You might start with therapy alone, add psychiatric support later, or work with both at once. If your needs change and you want to add another layer of care, that option is already here. Our providers communicate directly with one another, so you never have to coordinate it yourself or repeat your story from scratch.

My doctoral training in counseling psychology adds something many therapists cannot: a deep grounding in how experiences, relationships, and the systems around us shape mental health, so treatment can be built around the whole person rather than a single symptom. When it helps, I coordinate with our psychiatric providers and counselors, so your care holds together as a whole.

Whether you are coming to me first or adding therapy to existing care, our team makes that process simple. Learn more about our counseling services or meet the full CMCS team I work alongside.
