Jennie Brown, DNP, ARNP, PMHNP-BC — Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Jennie specializes in psychiatric medication management in Issaquah and Sammamish for children, adolescents, and adults, with additional expertise in LGBTQIA+ care, women’s mental health, and immigrant and refugee populations.

How I Got Here — Twelve Years of Psychiatric Medication Management

I did not set out to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner in a straight line. I started with a biology degree from Carleton College in Minnesota, followed by nursing at the University of Virginia — and it was in nursing that something clicked. The clinical side of medicine mattered deeply to me, but what I kept coming back to was the story underneath the symptoms. The way a person’s history, their relationships, their sense of safety in the world, shapes everything about how they feel and function.

That pull toward the whole person is what led me into psychiatry.

I went on to earn my Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Washington, with a focus in family psychiatric and mental health practice. During that time I was selected as a Nursing Fellow in the University of Washington’s Leaders Education in Adolescent Health program — known as LEAH — a multidisciplinary fellowship that deepened my training in adolescent development, family systems, and the particular complexity of caring for young people navigating mental health challenges. That fellowship shaped a lot of how I think about this work today.

For more than twelve years I have provided psychiatric medication management across the full lifespan, from children and adolescents to adults, and I have never lost sight of what drew me here in the first place. Every person who walks through the door has a story worth understanding. My job is to listen carefully enough to actually hear it.

How I Help — Psychiatric Medication Management in Issaquah for Children, Adolescents & Adults

If you have ever felt like a psychiatric appointment was something that happened to you rather than with you — a brief visit, a prescription, and a door closing — I want you to know that is not how I practice.

You know your life better than any chart does. My job is to understand it well enough to actually help.

I take time at the start of every relationship to understand not just what is happening clinically, but what is happening in a person’s life — at home, at school, at work, in relationships. Psychiatric medication management works best when it is part of a broader picture, not a substitute for one. For many of my clients, that means working alongside therapists here at CMCS or elsewhere, coordinating with primary care providers, and staying in real communication with families when that is appropriate and wanted.

I also bring therapeutic tools into my work directly: cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-focused CBT, and motivational interviewing. Sessions are not just medication check-ins. There is room to do real work together.

Every person I see deserves to feel safe in that room. That includes LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, clients navigating immigrant and refugee experiences, women at every stage of life including pregnancy and postpartum, people with disabilities, and anyone who has felt dismissed or unseen in a clinical setting before. You will not have to translate yourself here.

The Benefit of Having a Full Team Behind You

One of the things that makes working with Jennie at Centered Mind Counseling Services different is that integrated care is already here when you need it. Whether you start with psychiatric support alone, therapy alone, or both at once — if your needs shift or you want to add another layer of care, that option is in place. Jennie works directly alongside our therapists and counselors, so your providers are talking to each other. You do not have to coordinate it yourself or repeat your story from scratch every time.

For children and families especially, that kind of coordination makes a meaningful difference. A therapist who knows what is happening in psychiatric appointments. A prescriber who knows what is happening in therapy. A family that does not fall through the cracks between providers who have never spoken. On a Personal Note

I love learning things. All kinds of things. Formal clinical training is one version of that, but so is picking up a crochet hook and figuring out how to make amigurumi. Reading constantly and widely means I can hold a conversation about almost anything and find something interesting in most places. At home my three dogs have strong opinions about everything and make sure I never take myself too seriously. They are, as I have described them, high-maintenance — and I mean that with complete affection.

Jennie Brown brings more than twelve years of psychiatric experience and genuine warmth to every client she works with at Centered Mind Counseling Services (CMCS). From children navigating their first mental health challenges to adults managing complex, long-standing conditions, Jennie meets each person where they are and stays with them as things change.
