Personal Narratives

From an early age, I’ve had an interest in stories. It’s my belief that we each have our personal narratives which are shaped by our experiences and thoughts. These stories are how we see the world and I always loved to listen and learn about these perspectives. It reminded me how much of our lives are determined by our minds and our senses.

A Passion For Listening

Hearing these stories developed my passion for listening and a desire for those telling the stories to feel heard. It was easy to see in this shifting world that many felt alone. We were sharing stories but not telling our deep truths.

I wanted to become a counselor because of the need and loneliness I saw around me, but also in myself. Anxiety and depression aren’t new topics but they’ve become part of our conversations. Adding to that conversation and acting as a door to them has shown me that we really can change from understanding ourselves deeply. Acknowledgement and understanding are the beginning steps on the path to living the life we want while accepting the surprises along the way.

My Approach

I’ve worked with children, adolescents and adults in a community and inpatient setting. My knowledge of the differences between generations and level of crises has helped me shape my counseling practice. Because we are each individuals with our own stories, we each revise our stories in different ways. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works for many, Person-Centered and emotion focused work is also necessary to help ourselves fully. To treat the whole person, I pull from many approaches and adapt my sessions to meet the needs of the individual.

My training at Bastyr University, where I earned my Masters in Counseling Psychology, emphasized an eclectic and adaptable method. In my practice, I will continue to write and edit this through opportunities of continuing education.

On a Personal Note

In my free time, I love to read and discuss books as well as go on walks with friends–where we are generally discussing our favorite series. I won’t say no to a hike but prefer a ‘let’s enjoy nature’ pace and taking the time to admire the views. You’ll most likely find me on top of a mountain having a lively discussion about plot holes and characterization, and trying to figure out what’s next on my TBR pile.
