Why Counseling?
My journey to becoming a psychologist was rooted in my own experiences of feeling misunderstood and witnessing loved ones struggle deeply with mental health and substance use concerns. Growing up in a very outspoken and loud family, I often felt out of place for being quiet, sensitive, and introverted. I was the child who bottled up emotions because I did not feel comfortable voicing my thoughts or opinions. Fortunately, I had someone in my corner who was compassionate, nonjudgmental and patient, and they helped me find alternative solutions to express myself. These were pivotal experiences in my childhood and adolescence that showed me the significance of having a safe space. I understand what it is like to not always know how or to not want to share your emotions. It can be terrifying, uncomfortable, and even frustrating. As a clinician, I aim to create a warm, supportive, empathic, accepting environment for my clients to feel safe and comfortable to share their stories. I strive to help my clients feel heard and understood while conveying that their journey should not be rushed. Each journey is unique, and I hope to sit with individuals during their most challenging times and be a part of their healing process.
Professional Experience & Who I Help:
As I mentioned, I have witnessed people very dear to me struggle with mental health and substance use concerns. I’ve seen those incredible individuals be misunderstood and subjected to stigma and shame that weigh them down, making it very difficult for them to reach out for help. When I began my professional journey, I knew I had a passion for this population. During graduate school, I sought out an internship that allowed me to provide therapy services to adolescents experiencing substance use and other mental health concerns. It was during this internship and throughout my courses that my passion for helping others was solidified. It was also my first experience working with adolescents, and I knew then that I wanted to do it again if I had the opportunity. Throughout my various clinical placements, I have also had the privilege to provide individual and group therapy to young adults in college. I have met my clients where they are to explore and process trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, family conflict, life stressors, academic difficulties, gender-related concerns, substance use issues, and more. At Centered Mind Counseling Services, I will be working with adolescents and young adults who present with a variety of concerns, including those noted above.
